Ky'ovarde is a Warden of the Order of the Twin Eyes – one of the many different Orders in the Val'Kyorl'solenurn clan. Though different Orders vie for being the True Path of the Goddess, Ky'ovarde's group seems a mix of more militant mind sets – all tainted are to be slain, heretic hunts are acceptable even with non-targeted clans – and a few more moderate views – one of their members is a half-breed named Sang'oro, so perhaps they are at least willing to let individuals prove themselves. Ky'ovarde herself seems to be a mix of these views, though often her words show an approach so fanatical that she sees some heretical acts as acceptable if they further the cause of the Goddess.
Ky'ovarde is rather tall and dyes her hair auburn with black streaks (or tips for her bangs). She wears part of it up in a flat bun on the back of her head that uses sheathed daggers to hold it together – or perhaps the bun holds up the daggers in the end. Her outfit is a mix of violet and white, with dark gauntlets. The base color of her hair seems to match her one visible eye. The other eye is covered with a flap of cloth that would act as a double bandanna for the head. The lines around that eye suggests it is damaged or gone. Ky'ovarde's remaining eye is stylized to have a smaller iris and pupil compared to the size of the cornea, possible to show a shrewed, hawk-eyed attention to detail or to bring out her fanatical tunnel vision.
Ky'ovarde first is mentioned in Chapter 10, though not seen, as Tir'ade Kyorl'solenurn returns from patrol to announce a gate has been opened in an area of the Nidraa'chal War Ruins now under control of the Val'Sarghress clan. Chirinide Val'Kyorl'solenurn recognizes him from her dream, so she volunteers to go with him instead of the Templar searching out Ky'ovarde. The individual with similar colored hair and a missing eye in the Prologue was confirmed as not being Ky'ovarde in the chibi comic following that chapter.
Ky'ovarde is summoned to Ilharess Shimi'lande Val'Kyorl'solenurn's throne room later, where she is charged with hunting down any Vloz'ress found outside the safety of their own lands in retaliation to what was done to Kami'seide Kyorl'solenurn – a poor Warden who was captured and turned into a doll by Ilharess Kharla'ggen Vel'Vloz'ress before being delivered to the Kyorl'solenurn. The Ilharess seems to stress it be Vloz'ress that would normally be captured for wandering in neutral zones, not a full out attack on the Vloz'ress lands or in territory that another clan may take offense over. Ky'ovarde takes the mission with delight.
The Warden brings with her a group of Order of the Twin Eyes members, Drowussu she seems to have worked with previously and may be of her own personal unit. This consists of Inquisitor Ae'theriss, Crusader Ano'toti, Templar Sang'oro, Warden Mili'ani and Templar Ron'nae. However, Inquisitor Desmonde of the Order of the Holy Eye accompanies them, possibly to enforce the requirement that they only target errant, free-roaming tainted, especially Vloz'ress. Her existence with the group shows some worry on Shimi'lande's part of Ky'ovarde's ability to follow instructions versus her own personal desires/beliefs.
Ky'ovarde has tracked a group of demon-hunting Vloz'ress into the wilds outside of Chel'el'Sussoloth, moving along the trade routes of the Sarghress. Ae'theriss is able to detect both the traveling Sarghress and this group of demon hunters, of whom she is able to determine Sene'kha Vel'Vloz'ress as a leader. This proves to be a great prize for the Heretic Hunters, though they are reminded not to make a purity search of the Sarghress by Desmonde. Ron'nae volunteers to go on ahead to scout the area and engage any Vloz'ress wandering free of the group, and he encounters Kuso and Baliir Vloz'ress. Kuso flees to warn Sene'kha, which could cause more trouble for the Heretic Hunters.
The group is baited into a trap by a demon posing as Sene'kha. They are beset by tainted wolf summons and a band of Vloz'ress lead by Sene'kha's mate, Kess'sen Vloz'ress. Ky'ovarde leaves her fellows to handle the other attackers while she closes a gate that Ae'theriss has warned her about. As with Chirinide earlier, she worries if she can close the gate in time, possibly showing that the amount of effort needed to close a large gate can easily extend beyond the mana capacity of a Warden, or that the soulmir that Wardens carry do have limited capacity.
After closing the gate, she faces off against Sene'kha using sealed demons to create a blade that feeds off her own body and blood to form. Sene'kha taunts the Warden as being a heretic for using demonic powers, while Ky'ovarde reasons that if she is using the demons to do the will of the Goddess, then it is acceptable – this displays the fine line where fanaticism becomes heresy within itself. Vloz'ress members such as Baliir note that the Vloz'ress do what they do for the greater good of Drow, and even their former leader studied possessed beings to better prepare the race. Likewise, the use of evil to fight it being acceptable to Ky'ovarde is a sign she does not think that differently despite what she tells herself. It also shows that Wardens are practically Velnari themselves, as learning the mechanics of sealing gates and demons are part of what it takes to be a Summoner.
Just as with Kes'sen and San'goro, the fight turns out to be a stalemate. The battle comes to a halt however when a group of Sarghress lead by De'vess Quill'yate Yurun'hiir Sarghress arrives, after being alerted to enemies in the area by a group of attacking dwarves. Sene'kha appears to over-stretch herself by deciding to open another portal to take the Sarghress group out as well. The distraction allows Ky'ovarde to strike Sene'kha and wound her badly. However, the Order of the Twin Eye escape with a wounded Desmonde, and the Vloz'ress escape sans Sene'kha.
As the Highland Raiders approach Machike'shikumo, Ky'ovarde announces that someone will need to be sent back for the rest of the Order of the Twin Eyes and a clan ambassador. This is done within a short time and a Judicator with an entourage of troops from the Order arrives to negotiate with the Sarghress for Sene'kha just as Ariel's group is leaving the outpost. When their wish is granted, Ky'ovarde is given the honors of beheading the former lead Nether Summoner and sealing Sene'kha's seed as the body is set alight, purged by fire.
“I'm fighting fire with fire. To use it for a holy purpose in the service of the Goddess makes it acceptable.”
- Warden Ky'ovarde reasoning to Sene'kha why she uses Velnar despite its heretical implications.
